2023-2024 Concert Season

Nagata Shachu is excited to announce its 2023-2024 concert season with three unique offerings that is sure to please everyone’s musical tastes!

Concert 1- Kiyoshi Nagata 40th anniversary as a taiko artist with special guests
Celebrating his 40 years as a taiko performer, Kiyoshi Nagata is joined by special guests Oregano Percussion (Michelle Colton and Alejandro Céspedes), the Canadian Chinese Orchestra (Amely Zhou, Lipeng Wu, Lilian Yang, Lina Cao) and Korean Music and Dance collective Rusterrat (Charles Hong, Joo Hyung Kim, Soojung Kwon, Seong Hyun Park ). The concert will also feature the debut of taiko duo Korokoro (Akemi Akachi & Kiyoshi Nagata) and the next generation of Nagata Shachu members (Tatsuki Shimoda, Brian Liang, Eriko Murata and Sakura Ariga).

Kiyoshi Nagata is the founder and artistic director of Nagata Shachu, Canada’s preeminent professional taiko group. As a performer, he has toured widely across North America and internationally with his ensemble and as a solo artist. His original music has been used in television, film, and dance productions and have been featured on several recordings.

Concert 2 – “From Japan to Madagascar”
On Saturday, March 23, 2024, Nagata Shachu will present “From Japan to Madagascar”, a double bill concert featuring the ten ten – an eclectic music ensemble, using Japanese and western instruments , which performs Japanese folk songs with a modern twist. The collective is directed by shamisen player and vocalist Ms. Aki Takahshi who is also the associate director of Nagata Shachu. The second half of the concert features a mashup of Nagata Shachu’s thrilling Japanese taiko rhythms with the African infused melodies of Madagascar-born, Toronto-based guitarist and singer Donne Roberts (a two time Juno award winner) with his band.

Concert 3 – “Possibilities”
Nagata Shachu’s season finale concert “Possibilities” will be on Friday, June 21 at the Fleck Dance Theatre (Harbourfront Centre) when all nine members of the ensemble take to the stage in what promises to be a dramatic and thrilling end to its season. The performance will premiere several new works composed by members of the ensemble.
