In Japan, ONI are at once both ogres and gods, sent among us to dispel and purify the evil which is found in the world. At ceremonies and festivals throughout Japan, people will don the mask of an ONI, transforming themselves into gods to perform important rituals. In this adaptation of Kiyoshi Nagata’s “Pulse Progressions”, ONI emerge amidst the tumult of sounds and rhythms to dance about the stage.
