Nagata Shachu announces its 25th Anniversary Concert Season
Nagata Shachu is excited to announce their 25th anniversary season with three performances in December, March and June for the 2022/2023 season: a 25th Anniversary Concert featuring rare and never before heard compositions; Spin-off, a world renowned DJ & breakdance collab; and Flow フロー, a modern, boundary-pushing take on traditional Japanese taiko.
While embracing deep reverence for the taiko and its legacy, this season sees Nagata Shachu boldly forging a path for how this musical form can be modernized and continued into the future.
On December 3, 2022 at Al Green Theatre, a stunning 25th Anniversary Concert will kick off the season. Featuring new and rarely performed works from Nagata Shachu’s extensive quarter-century catalog, this season’s inaugural concert is a celebration of the vibrant taiko scene in Toronto and beyond with an exciting glance into the future of these ancient drums.
Spin-off, on March 11, 2023 at Fleck Dance Theatre, will feature founding Turntable Monkz member and DMC World Champion DJ Dopey spinning records while Toronto-based world champion breakdancers and 2024 Paris Olympians B-boy Onton & B-girl Konatsu of Supernaturalz Crew spin on the dancefloor. In this unexpected but exhilarating collaboration, the traditional taiko inspires Canada’s best and most creative DJ and B-boy\B-girl talent in a way never attempted before.
In FLOW フロー, the final concert of the season on June 10, 2023 at Hart House Theatre, Nagata Shachu and next-generation Japanese taiko soloist Masayuki Sakamoto will embrace flow – the mental state in which a person is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process. This spellbinding season finale will weave together Nagata Shachu’s traditional taiko rhythms with Sakamoto’s rebellious rock n roll musical sensibilities, while hypnotically immersed in the flow state.
